Although it's not as widely known in the U.S. as his adventure tales like White Fang and The Call of the Wild, Martin Eden is now regarded as one of Jack London 's greatest achievements.

"Martin Eden" (based on Jack London's novel of the same name) is a magnificent film. It is the kind of epic cinema you rarely see anymore. It reminded me of the films of Bertolucci, Visconti and Coppola, while having a distinct character of its own.

The 1st half flows beautifully with its classic theme of lovers separated by class division, w/ Martin desperate to overcome the divide on his own terms by achieving success as a writer. But it almost felt like the film was Act 1 and 3 with the 2nd act Martin Eden es un chico humilde de pueblo que se gana la vida trabajando como marinero. Un día, Martin defiende de una agresión a Arturo, un joven de clase alta. Como agradecimiento, éste invita a Martin a su hogar y poco a poco le va introduciendo en su estilo de vida. Martin is a self-taught proletarian with artistic aspirations who hopes that his dreams of becoming a writer will help him rise above his station and marry a wealthy young university student. His dissatisfactions of working-class toil and bourgeois success lead to political awakening. The semiautobiographical "Martin Eden" is the most vital and original character Jack London ever created.
